Picasso of India Maqbool Fida Hussain was one of India's famous painter and an icon among Indian artists.


Maqbool Fida Hussain, the bare foot painter started his career in painting by painting posters of Hindi cinema wanted to give back to the Hindi cinema by setting up a museum of Hindi cinema in Dubai. He was the man who was enchanted by the beauty of Indian female actors, and it was when he got captivated by the magic of diva of Hindi cinema. MF Husain is the most famous modern artist among his contemporaries. He is synonymous with Indian modern art. Husain’s painting titled ‘Battle of Ganga and Yamuna: Mahabharata 12’ executed in 1972-1971, created a world record for Modern and Contemporary Indian Art when it was auctioned on March 20th 2008 at Christie’s New York for a whopping $1.6 million. The Forbes magazine, mentioned him as the "Picasso of India".
Husain drew great criticism from various Hindu religious groups for depicting Hindu Gods and Goddesses in the nude, some of them even in compromising positions. Although they were painted two decades ago, they came to light when a magazine published an article with images of the paintings and criticized Husain. He depicted India as a ‘Mother India” nude with the names of the states written all over.
